Childcare centers

EMCC Child Care Center was established in September 2004 by the EMCC campus community to provide quality and affordable child care to children 6-weeks to 5 years-old for EMCC students, faculty and staff members. This program also offered Head Start services to children in the 3-5 year-old program in partnership with Penquis Child Development. In June 2005, Penquis Child Development was awarded an RFP to operate the center.

In June of 2007, Eastern Maine Medical Center presented an RFP to provide a designated number of child care slots for EMCC employees. Penquis Child Development was awarded the RFP to provide these slots in conjunction with the college.

Due to the significant funding supports that are provided to the center from Early Head Start/Head Start, EMCC, and Eastern Maine Medical Center, Head Start eligible families, EMCC students, faculty and staff, and EMMC employees have enrollment priority. In the event that there is space available after meeting the EHS/HS enrollment and the needs of the campus community and Eastern Maine Medical Center, the program is open to the general public.

The center works in conjunction with the EMCC Early Childhood Education Program, as well as other EMCC departments to offer a laboratory setting which exemplifies quality and appropriate practice for practicum students.

The center is licensed by the State of Maine Department of Health and Human Services and accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, a division of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. NAEYC is a rigorous, voluntary process by which early childhood programs demonstrate that they consistently meet the national standards of excellence. The program also must comply with the comprehensive Head Start Performance Standards and is reviewed by the Federal Head Start program every three years. This national status of excellence is recognized in the State of Maine by allowing participating parents a double child care tax credit on their Maine Income Taxes. EMCC Child Care also maintains a Step 4, the highest level awarded, on the State of Maine DHHS Maine Child Care Quality Rating system. The QRS is a voluntary rating system for early care and education centers and gives parents a useful tool for selecting quality programs.
