Five students from the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program, a joint effort between Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) and Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC), graduated on the morning of Wednesday, September 13, 2017. The ten-week program is specifically designed for incumbent workers at Eastern Maine Medical Center; three of the graduates were housekeepers, and two were unit secretaries.
In late 2016, the Business and Industry department at EMCC started working with the Clinical Education department at EMMC on solutions to fill the need for CNAs at the hospital. The collaboration yielded a dedicated program to provide skill training to incumbent employees from several areas of the hospital, including housekeeping, administrative roles, and food service departments.
“Thanks to our partnership with EMCC, our staff members can pursue an exciting new career in a field that supports nursing needs throughout Eastern Maine Medical Center,” says Deborah Sanford, MBA, MSN, RN vice president, nursing and patient care services, Eastern Maine Medical Center. “We appreciate the opportunity to continue to provide this CNA education to employees interested in working more directly with patients.”
The CNA program offers important career advancement opportunities to EMMC’s workforce, and illustrates EMCC’s commitment to provide necessary training. “We are excited to celebrate the graduation of five students through the first cohort at a special celebration at EMMC,” says Francesca DeSanctis, Business Development & Training Coordinator at EMCC. “I worked closely with Shelley Ryan, BSN, RN, Staff Developer to implement the program and pass this first cohort. All of the students passed the state certification exam, thanks to Shelley’s dedication and instruction, and will be employed as CNAs at EMMC within the next month.”
EMCC plans to offer another cohort with the same opportunities in Spring 2018, as this becomes a model for training CNAs.
