From the President

Students,

It is hard to believe that the Spring 2012 semester has already begun. In this on-demand communication society we have I am always interested in finding different ways to communicate with students. Look for a Presidential Blog to appear on the EMCC website sometime later this semester. In the meantime I wanted to communicate with you some information and happenings for this semester.

Improved Student Services-
The financial aid office, information technology department and the business office have now implemented a new electronic bookstore voucher system that integrates with your student id. The new system seems to be working well and I have heard good feedback from both students and staff. As I walk the hallways the lines seem to be shorter than other semesters.

The eagle express (in its second semester) is transporting students from the main campus to Rangeley Hall in the mornings and late afternoons. For students that need a ride in the evening to/from Rangeley all you have to do is call our security number 745-6090 and an officer will give you a ride.

As a way to provide additional computers to students the library now is loaning out 10 laptop computers to be used throughout the semester. You can take the laptops anywhere on campus but you can only loan them out for a four-hour period of time.

Student Academic Opportunities-
EMCC students for the past three years have been awarded the George Mitchell Peace Scholarship to go and learn in Ireland. The nomination period is now open for students interested in applying for this distinguished program. There are informational brochures available throughout the campus for those of you who are interested.

New Programs of Study on the way!
Recently the Board of Trustees of the Maine Community College System has approved a new degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management at EMCC to begin Fall 2012. At this month’s board meeting it is expected that they will approve our own Fire Science Program. For information regarding these new programs please contact the enrollment center.

Student Activities/Leadership Opportunities
Our student clubs and student senate have now formed a new Student Leadership Circle creating synergy and excitement on campus. I have attended a few of these meetings and I am impressed with all the good things our student groups are doing and want to do in the future. If you are interested in participating in any of our current activities or want to start a new club contact the office of student life at 974-4664.

Sports
Our men and woman basketball teams have had a great start to their seasons. For the first time in the history of the college the men’s basketball team is ranked number #1 in the nation according to the recent poll of the USCAA. Over the next few weeks there will be many home games and I would encourage you to come out and see both the women and men eagles play.

We will also be starting a club baseball and softball teams for this spring in hopes of establishing intercollegiate teams over the next two years.

Have a great semester!
