EMCC Live-In Student Firefighter Program
The Live-in Program is an exciting way to gain experience in fire and emergency medical services. Not only will you have the opportunity to learn from well-seasoned professionals, but you will get to apply this knowledge in everyday situations on the job. Students in the Live-in Program live at participating fire stations while attending school to gain their degree in Fire Science. Those who work diligently at school and at the station gain the knowledge they will need to become a full-time professional firefighter or emergency medical technician. The Live-in Program provides a great opportunity for motivated individuals who are seeking employment at a full-time department.
Area departments currently participating in the Live-in Program include Brewer, Eddington, Hampden, Hermon, Holden, and Milford. With a few exceptions, each department provides a similar learning environment. EMS experience can be gained while enrolled in the Live-in program through the host fire department or by a local EMS provider. Each department provides live-in students with rent-free lodging in exchange for being “on call” during specific hours. In addition, students enrolled in the Live-in Program are paid for going on calls and participating in training exercises.
Prior to acceptance into the Live-in Program, students must attend a two-week academy. In the academy, students will learn all the skills needed to be a firefighter, while building camaraderie with fellow fire science students participating in the Live-in Program. Once a student has met the firefighting qualifications, he or she will be qualified to fight fire with the rest of the firefighters in their department.
The Live-in Program gives students the opportunity to practice what they have been taught and gain the experience needed for a career in fire and EMS. Students who successfully complete their academic courses, including EMS, while performing their duties in their live-in positions become appealing candidates to full-time fire departments.
Applications for the Live-in Program will be taken in the spring. Download the application today. [pdf]
