FitBy2014 Announcement: Our Campus is now Tobacco Free!

Jan 1, 2014

In keeping with our mission to provide a healthy and safe environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors, Eastern Maine Community College developed a Wellness Committee to consider the implementation of a comprehensive wellness program called FitBy2014, which encompasses a tobacco-free campus, exercise plans, healthy foods, and lifestyles of moderation.  The tobacco-free campus initiative applies to all faculty, staff, students, visitors, vendors and contractors.  As of  January 4, 2014,  there is no tobacco use of any kind permitted on EMCC property which includes all buildings and resident halls.

Students were asked to participate in a survey sent by the Wellness Committee to obtain information on this wellness plan including the tobacco-free initiative.  Over 60% of the surveyed students supported this initiative.  Educational materials directing interested individuals to services providing tobacco cessation support and treatment are available free to all and are located in Katahdin and Maine Hall.

EMCC is not requiring any individual to quit using tobacco products, but the campus is now tobacco-free.  This requires everyone to refrain from using tobacco while on college property.  The College encourages you to participate in the implementation of this wellness plan including the tobacco-free campus.  Additional information will be distributed to all students and employees on new exercise opportunities at the gym, track adventures, and healthy recipes throughout the year.  Comments and suggestions, including recipes can be sent to
