Faculty members of Eastern Maine Community College’s (EMCC) Diesel, Truck and Heavy Equipment program are one step closer to achieving certification in part due to a donation from the Lane Construction Corporation, based in Cheshire, CT with operations in Maine. The gift of a paving roller will serve to enhance the student experience and help EMCC in their quest to attain AED certification in Diesel/Equipment Technology, a first for the College’s Diesel, Truck and Heavy Equipment program.
Of the significance of the gift to EMCC, President Lawrence Barrett noted, “Graduates of this program are employed as heavy equipment service technicians, service managers, and maintenance supervisors, as well as sales personnel, service writers, warranty claims adjusters and parts persons. The gift of the paving roller provides our students with the hands-on technical work experience in the engineering, testing, servicing, troubleshooting and repairing of heavy compacting equipment used to compact soil, gravel, concrete or asphalt in the construction of roads and foundations.”
According to Gene Fadrigon, chair/instructor of the EMCC Diesel, Truck and Heavy Equipment program, the addition of the Lane paver roller will provide students with the opportunity to work and trouble-shoot equipment in the construction industry. “Today’s diesel/equipment technicians require more complex and sophisticated skills and knowledge in both technology and academic areas,” he said. “Accreditation serves to validate that our graduates are in position to take advantage of industry opportunities, greater job flexibility and choice of specialties.”
“Lane employees have a strong tradition of volunteering in the communities where we do business,” said Rodney Lane, District Manager for Lane Construction. “This tradition is tied to Lane’s core values, particularly care for people—which includes being a good neighbor and giving back to the community. We are happy to be able to contribute to an effort that will further enhance the education of our future workforce, some of who may one day even work at Lane.
