A Message from President Barrett to Students Summer 2012

Jun 4, 2012

It has already been two weeks since the 45th EMCC graduation and Memorial Day has flown by. The summer season is upon us!  When I began in higher education some 25+ years ago most of the summer was the “slow time” this is not the case anymore and EMCC is a thriving campus throughout the year. This summer the college is rolling out a different summer schedule with more expanded offerings to fit the needs of a variety of students. Summer enrollment is already up over 10% compared to last year. However, there is still time to register for classes that begin later this June.

Summer is also the time to renovate and update the facilities. EMCC will be expanding its classroom space by 4 new state of the art classes (24 additional sections of classes) to accommodate our growing enrollment. These new classrooms will be located by the Campus Bookstore and the Eagles Café and will open for the start of Fall 2012 semester.

I just received a report from Bangor Area Transit (BAT Bus) that indicated this past year that EMCC students used the Bat 21,125 times and saved over $24,000 in fares. Special thanks to the student leaders who worked with the administration to help pay for this service and make it a success.

Special congratulations to Cody Hand and Morgan Talty.  Cody was awarded the 2012 George J. Mitchell Peace Scholarship by the MCCS selection committee.  Cody will go to Ireland for one semester and is EMCC’s 4th consecutive student selected.  Morgan Talty has been accepted to attend Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.  Morgan will focus on his writing as he works towards becoming a college professor.

Have a great month of June the black flies of Maine will be gone before we know it!
