President’s Message To Students December 2012
Dec 2, 2012
Last night I was so impressed with our students, staff and faculty that participated in the Bangor Festival of Lights Parade. Thousands of spectators saw 44 students and 26 staff and their families celebrate the pride of the EMCC family by riding a float and singing the “12 Days of College” , the theme of this year’s parade- Songs of the Season. The song was written by Liz Russell Associate Dean of Enrollment at EMCC and various students and staff recorded the music for the parade with the assistance of Bronson Audio Visual of Bangor. In the two years we have participated in this parade it has become one of the highlights of the Barrett family start of the Holiday season in Maine.
With just 16 or 17 days left in the semester and the Holidays upon us I know this is a stressful time for you. I looked at my own calendar today and I am trying to figure out how to get everything done. At the same time I was reviewing my appointments I was reminded about the death of one of our students Retha Thomas who died a week ago in an early morning Black Friday car accident. Retha had just started college at EMCC and had a promising college career ahead of her. Retha’s daughter also attended EMCC and her son was a recent EMCC graduate. This type of tragedy reinforces for me that family and friends are precious to all of us and how quickly events can change our lives.
I know this time of year is for studying for finals, submitting papers and getting everything else done, but please be safe and enjoy your family and keep the Thomas family in your thoughts in the coming weeks.
All the best to you on your finals and please be sure to drop by the EMCC kiosk in the Bangor Mall this holiday season. There is no better gift than a good education!
