Online Learning

Eastern Maine Community College offers a variety of online courses to meet the educational and scheduling needs of our students.  Online courses are just as rigorous and demanding as classroom courses but provide students with the flexibility to complete coursework from the comfort of their home.

In keeping with the College’s mission in providing “the highest quality post-secondary technical, career, and transfer education…”, online courses meet all academic policies and requirements established by the College including those related to syllabi, course content and learning objectives, expectations of student workload, evaluation of students, grading policies, and student feedback to faculty.

What do I need to take an online course?

Students registering for online classes must be self-motivated, organized, and disciplined.  At a minimum, students must have access to a reliable computer, internet, word processing software, and email.  Additionally, students should be comfortable uploading documents and navigating websites.  There may be other software requirements depending on the course.

Before registering for an online course, you should have a discussion with your academic advisor to determine whether this option is right for you.  Once you’ve made your decision, be prepared to spend at least 10 hours per week for each 3-credit hour online course that you’re taking.  View the online course checklist for more information.

Getting Started

On the first day of classes for a given semester, you need to check your EMCC email to find out how to get started with your class or access your online course via the MyEMCC portal.  You must follow the “getting started” instructions in your instructor’s email within the first few days of class; otherwise, you will be dropped from the course as a “No Show.” Many instructors use EMCC’s Learning Management System, e-Learning, as the platform for delivering coursework; however, there are some instructors who use software (available in the bookstore) from a third party vendor.

All students new to EMCC are required to complete the online new student orientation.  Through this experience, you will become familiar with the elements of EMCC’s Learning Management System.

What Else Do I Need to Know?

  • Read the syllabus and course materials carefully. You are responsible for meeting all homework and examination deadlines.
  • Never share your student ID with anyone. You have sole responsibility for completing all course requirements.
  • Purchase your textbook and/or computer access code within the first few days of classes to avoid getting behind.
  • Though the class is available to you 24/7, the instructor is not.
