Medical Radiography is a two-year or three-year program that integrates scientific concepts into working skills through classroom study and intensive clinical experience. The program concentrates on diagnostic radiology, including angiography and computerized tomography. Other imaging modalities such as nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, sonography, and magnetic resonance imaging are briefly discussed.
Medical radiographers are health professionals who combine technical knowledge with radiographic and anatomical knowledge to obtain diagnostic images of all parts of the human body. Successful radiographers must have a good working knowledge of human anatomy, radiographic positioning, radiologic physics, equipment operation, and quality assurance. As members of a health care team, radiographers must also understand and apply principles of good patient care, and conduct themselves in accordance with medical ethical standards.
The Medical Radiography Program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), 20 N. Wacker Drive, Suite 2850, Chicago, IL 60606-3182. Graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), and to apply for Maine licensure in radiography.
MEDICAL RADIOGRAPHY PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Medical Radiography Program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to obtain and hold entry-level radiographic positions; develop interpersonal, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills which enable the students to be contributing members of their profession.

Clinical Internships
Clinical education courses are an essential and mandatory aspect of the Medical Radiography Program. The clinical internship provides the opportunity for students to put into practice the information learned in their academic coursework. The sequence of the academic and clinical courses allows the student to initially gain basic knowledge in radiographic principles, positioning, procedures, health care & ethics, and apply those principles to clinical situations. Senior-level clinical courses allow students to fine-tune their clinical skills during routine exams, and advance their clinical skills during atypical and trauma examinations.

Clinical Externship Sites
Students may request assignments at three externship sites throughout the state. Assignments at externship sites may not exceed 80 hours/annually. Students are responsible for transportation to all clinical sites.

Clinical Obligations Statement
Students accepted into the Medical Radiography Program will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check in order to participate in clinical internship assignments. The fees associated with the criminal background check are the responsibility of the student. Students will be scheduled on a rotating basis at all clinical internship sites. Clinical internship shifts are typically 8 hours/day with daytime shifts ranging from 6 am – 5 pm. Evening rotations are also required with shifts ranging from 2 pm – 11 pm depending on the semester. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from all clinical assignments.
Articulation Agreements
Eastern Maine Community College’s Medical Radiography Program has articulation agreements in place for those graduates that would like to continue their education at four-year institutions. These institutions include Saint Joseph’s College of Maine, the University of Southern Maine, and Husson University.
I chose the Medical Radiography program at EMCC because their successful board passing rates were number one in the state.
I enjoyed being challenged every day with different exams and patients! It only made me a better student radiographer. I also enjoyed learning about all the different ways I can expand my career once I graduate.
I would tell anyone who is considering the Medical Radiography program at EMCC that it is one of the best programs to go through. The instructors are always there to help you in every way possible. They encourage and push you to do your best and step out of your comfort zone to help make you a better radiographer in the long run. The curriculum that is provided doesn’t compare to any other program. The assignments within the curriculum helped me understand everything a lot better. The radiography program at EMCC is definitely the way to go if considering medical radiography.
