Paramedic/Firefighter

The City of Belfast is accepting applications for the position of full-time Paramedic/Firefighter. This is a skilled Firefighting and EMS position consisting of EMS responsibilities, both Emergency and non-emergency, as well as combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires. This role involves responding to a wide range of fire suppression and medical emergencies to ensure the stability and safety of our community.

The successful candidate must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and possess and maintain a valid State of Maine Class C operator’s license. A Fire or EMS-related Associate Degree, and a Maine Paramedic license is preferred. Candidates with AEMT who are obtaining a Paramedic qualification are encouraged to apply. Additionally, a State of Maine Firefighter I/II certification is desired, including SCBA certification. Detailed job description with certification requirements is available on our website. Schedules include up to 24/hr rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. Candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background check and physical exam upon receiving a conditional offer.

The City offers a generous benefits package for full-time roles, including 14 paid holidays, Medical, Dental, Short-Term Disability and Life Insurance, Maine PERS Retirement, Vacation, Sick leave, and PTO. Base hourly rate for Firefighter/Paramedic – $28.39. Pay rates are dependent upon qualification level and experience.

Nature of this Position:

This full-time position involves skilled firefighting and emergency medical services. Personnel respond to a wide variety of emergencies and perform a diverse range of responsibilities, including but not limited to fire suppression, emergency medical care, rescue services, and public assistance. Employees must be capable of working 24-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and must demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and a strong commitment to public service.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide BLS and ALS-level emergency medical care, including CPR, patient assessment, extrication, and transport
• Assess patient condition and determine appropriate treatment and transport decisions
• Monitor and reassess patients during transport
• Safely transport patients to medical facilities
• Provide verbal reports to receiving healthcare staff
• Complete accurate and thorough patient care documentation from dispatch through transfer of care
• Operate within established protocols, policies, and medical direction
• Maintain EMS equipment, medications, and supplies
• Perform fire suppression, overhaul, and related firefighting activities
• Respond to alarms and emergency calls as assigned
• Operate fire apparatus and equipment safely and effectively
• Participate in rescue operations and other emergency services as needed
• Perform routine apparatus and equipment checks
• Maintain cleanliness and readiness of station, apparatus, and equipment
• Restock and disinfect equipment and supplies
• Participate in training, drills, and continuing education
• Respond to large-scale or major incidents as requested
• Participate in community outreach and public education activities
• Work collaboratively with law enforcement, fire personnel, and healthcare providers
• Effectively communicate with patients, families, and team members
• Operate within established protocols, policies, and medical direction
• Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skill, & Abilities:

There are important skills and qualifications for Firefighter /Paramedics, which can be learned through education and experience. Certain skills are very unique to being a Paramedic/Firefighter, including:

• Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-stress environments
• Strong patient assessment and critical thinking skills
• Effective verbal and written communication
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Demonstrated compassion, integrity, and professionalism
• Physical ability to lift, move, and transport patients safely
• Strong documentation and organizational skills

 Necessary Special Requirements:

• Valid Maine driver’s license
• Current Maine EMS Paramedic license
• Current certifications (or obtainable): CPR, ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, PIFT
• EVOC certification
• Interior Firefighter qualified (SCBA)
• Maintain a clean-shaven appearance in accordance with safety standards
• Personnel must maintain physical fitness sufficient to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, and prolonged physical exertion.

 Physical Demands:

Duties require:

• Frequent standing, walking, lifting, bending, climbing, and kneeling
• Lifting and moving patients and equipment up to 250 lbs with assistance
• Operating in hazardous and physically demanding environments
• Adequate vision, hearing, and situational awareness
