Bill Signed at EMCC Secures Tuition-Free Community College for Future Graduates
Eastern Maine Community College hosted a bill signing that ensures recent high school graduates in Maine will continue to have access to community college without paying tuition.
Held in the Automotive Technology lab, the event brought together students, educators, and state leaders. EMCC and United Technologies Center students stood alongside Governor Janet Mills during the signing, representing both those already benefiting from the program and those who will follow.
Since its launch, more than 23,000 Maine students have enrolled in community college without paying tuition, opening the door to training in high-demand fields across the state.
By adding the program to the state’s baseline budget, the legislation provides long-term certainty for students planning their next steps and for employers relying on a steady pipeline of skilled workers.
EMCC President Julius Edwards said the impact reaches beyond access to education.
“Free College represents a commitment to creating opportunities for students and families at Eastern Maine Community College and across Maine,” Edwards said. “It reflects a shared understanding that talent exists everywhere, and that it is our responsibility to close that gap. By expanding access to education, we are not only supporting individual students. We are strengthening Maine’s economy through education. We are building a workforce that is skilled, adaptable, and ready to meet the challenges ahead.”
For students, the continuation of tuition-free access removes a major financial barrier. For Maine, it strengthens the connection between education and workforce needs, helping more graduates move directly into careers that support communities across the state.
