Live-In Student Internship Program

Program Overview

The Live-In Student Internship Program provides full-time college students the opportunity to live at a participating local fire department rent-free in exchange for scheduled on-call duty hours and engagement in training, response, and station operations. The program offers immersive, real-world experience that strengthens professional skills and employment readiness in fire and emergency services.


Eligibility Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older by the start of the semester
  • Hold a valid driver’s license
  • Maintain full-time enrollment (minimum 12 credits)
  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Successfully complete departmental onboarding and adhere to departmental policies
  • Be able to obtain a State of Maine EMT License by the third semester

What to Expect

  • On-call duty typically ranges from 40–60 hours per week
  • Professional conduct and compliance with host department policies is required
  • Failure to meet standards may result in removal from the program

Training & Certifications: All Live-In students complete Firefighter I & II Academy (online coursework plus in-person practical training) and obtain EMT certification during the first semester.

Students also complete projects that support their academic growth and the needs of the host department.

    Accommodations vary by department and may be private or shared. Students are responsible for meals and transportation.

Additional Requirements if Selected

  • Criminal background check and driving record check
    Certain offenses may limit eligibility for clinical experiences, operating apparatus, or future employment in the fire service.
  • Departmental physical exam and respiratory evaluation
  • Commitment to one full academic year, with the option to return for a second year based on performance
